1 John 1:5-10
Light and truth in the Scriptures are inseparable and the Bible says that those who uphold the truth walk in the light of life or those who walk in the light will uphold the truth – John 3:21. What is the correlation between light and truth. Let us look at some scriptures that connects the two.
- Psalm 43:3 – Oh, send out Your light and Your truth! Let them lead me; Let them bring me to Your holy hill And to Your tabernacle (NKJV).
- John 3:21 – But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God (NKJV).
- Ephesians 5:8-10 – For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. (NKJV).
- 1 John 2:7-8 – Dear friends, I am not writing a new commandment for you; rather it is an old one you have had from the very beginning. This old commandment—to love one another—is the same message you heard before. Yet it is also new. Jesus lived the truth of this commandment, and you also are living it. For the darkness is disappearing, and the true light is already shining (NLT).
For the Christian Walk, knowing that the Word of God is the “Truth” that sanctifies believers – John 17:17 and the Word of God is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path – Psalm 119:105. The entrance of Your words gives light; It gives understanding to the simple – Psalm 119:130. We can conclude that Truth and Light are inseparable.
- 1 John 1:5-6 – equates absence of light to the absence of the truth.
- 1 John 1:7-8 – admonishes believers to walk in the light to preserve our fellowship with Jesus Christ. This provides a cleansing that keeps believers humble.
Walking in the light attracts and embraces the truth and vice versa – which makes it somewhat difficult for believers to miss out on the promises of the Lord. Hence Jesus confirmed in John 8:12 that “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness but have the light of life.” Jesus is the truth that we need to walk in personified – John 1:1-3 | John 14:6
