Lead Scriptures: Acts 2:4 | Acts 1:8 | John 14:26 | Ephesians 5:18

Introduction:

The Hebrew word for Spirit is ‘ruach’ (“ru-akh”) generally meaning wind, breath, mind, spirit and, when applied to God, ruach indicates creative activity – Genesis 1:2, and active power, the very presence, energy, and spirit of God Himself.

The Holy Spirit is very important in the life of every believer. When we receive Christ as our Lord and Saviour, He dwells in our lives (In-dwelling) but must be activated in us to fulfil God’s purpose (In-filling). He is required to fulfil Kingdom purpose and to be accepted by God and commune with Him daily – John 3:5, Proverbs 3:5-6.

When we worship God, we should ask the Holy Spirit to open our hearts to the Word of God, so that we will clearly understand His will for our lives.

We are to consult God’s written Word regularly, asking the Holy Spirit to illuminate our minds to understand and apply scriptural truths.

As we mature in our Christian walk, the Holy Spirit helps, guides and empowers us to fulfil the purpose of God in our lives – John14:26.

In Isaiah 59:19, we understand that we can receive the protection of the Holy Spirit.

Here are some examples of what the Holy Spirit does in a believer’s life:

  1. He helps us to be like Christ – John 16:13, Romans 8:16-17.
  2. He helps us to be obedient to God’s will – Acts 1:8, John 14:26.
  3. He imparts the fruit of the Spirit on us – Galatians 5:22-23.
  4. He gives us hope – Romans 8:1.
  5. He teaches and gives us insight – John 16:8, John 16:13.
  6. He guides and protects us – Romans 8:26-27.
  7. He helps and sanctifies us – John 17:17.
  8. He helps us in our ministries – Philippians 2:13, Ephesians 6:14-19.
  9. He helps us to evangelise effectively – Acts 1:8.

Conclusion:

The Holy Spirit is very important in the life of a believer. We need Him and His power in our lives as a conduit to becoming who and all God created us to be and we have His help in all situations. Without the Holy Spirit, the believer is powerless for He is the anchor of our destinies. His help, guidance and protection is indispensable.

As we depend on Him, we are able to live a holy and righteous life.
