2 Chronicles 26:1-22

Last week’s study was about “Giving God the glory”, and today we are going to learn from the life of Uzziah, the need for consistency in our Christian Walk. The scripture says in 1 Corinthians 10:12 – “So if you are in God’s treatment program and believe you are doing well, be careful that you do not fall behind in your appointments with God or in the partaking of His remedy” (Remedy NT Version). Remedy underlined here refers to God’s instruction for living which involves humility, obedience and love amongst many other Christian attributes. This passage will help every believer to check their walk whether they are still in God; for we are all God’s patients under care. Paul wrote in Philippians 3:13 – “Brothers and Sisters, I have not experienced this perfect, total, and complete restoration, but there is one thing I can do to assist God in His plan to heal and restore; I don’t lament past mistakes nor grow content with past victories; rather, I constantly push for the perfection which lies ahead” (Remedy NT Version).

Uzziah allowed his achievements to becloud his judgement of who he was and began to do what he was not instructed to do or called for. In taking on this role, not only was he out of his bounds, but he also became an obstacle to God by side-stepping those whom God had called.

2 Chronicles 26:16-18 – he allowed pride in his heart and violated God’s order and requirement. This can happen to any believer, when you begin to think more of your knowledge, achievements, conveniences and expectations beyond what God demands of you to do. Many people have even criticised their God appointed leaders and created a difficult vacuum knowingly or unknowingly. However, it takes the heart of humility to be consistent in God’s restoration program for our lives or to quickly repent when one misses the mark.

Uzziah’s good works and victories (2 Chronicles 26:3-15) were not able to save him when he violated divine order.

Discussion:

  1. 2 Chronicles 26:8, 15 – Uzziah had fame, became strong and was marvellously helped. How can believers remain focused in a world full of boasting, people praise and overarching self-importance?
  2. Uzziah’s heart was lifted up to his destruction – 2 Chronicles 26:16 | Proverbs 16:18-19. How can believers manage unfilled expectations that has led many to sins? E.g. unfilled expectations in relationships e.g. (in marriage has led to infidelity), (in friendship has led to betrayal and abandonment), (in business relationship has led to rejection and retaliations).
  3. Children especially teenagers have varied expectations and when these unguarded or unexplained expectations are not fulfilled, managed or controlled, we end up with damaged adults. What are the responsibilities of parents, the Church and society in mitigating against such circumstances?

Prayer.
