Scriptures: Romans 12:3-21 | Luke 22:24-27
Humility is defined as “Freedom from pride or arrogance”, it’s the quality or state of being humble. The word ‘humble’ is derived from the Greek word ‘Humus’ or earth. In inference therefore a humble person is a ‘grounded’ person. Grounded in the sense that he/she has a clear unambiguous understanding of their limitations.
Humility is a command. It is going beyond – I, me and myself. You can truly become humble if you practice acceptance; when you truly accept people for who they are. Accepting has many dimensions and needs you to be naturally flexible.
Acceptance means seeing or taking people and situations for what they are and dealing with people and things according to knowledge – Romans 12:18.
What humility is?
Humility involves avoiding the mindset of superiority and recognizing that everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses.
What humility is not?
Humility is NOT beating myself up, engaging in negative self-talk or being filled with self-loathing.
The real purpose of Humility is to help us recognize where we stand in relation to God. Submitting to Him, being obedient to Him and totally depending on Him.
Adopting a humble mindset comes with its own bunch of benefits. Peace of mind and happiness are its first natural consequences.
What does the attitude of humility embody? Romans 12:3
· Recognizing our limitations.
· Valuing others – showing respect and empathy.
· Receptive to constructive criticism and use it as an opportunity for growth.
· Admit when we are wrong and take responsibility for our actions.
· Modesty and unpretentiousness, not people pleasing.
· Appreciate the contributions of others and express gratitude for their support.
True humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less, seeing yourself as you actually are (one that has been helped and should also help others) 2 Corinthians 1:4. That can only come from a heart that is yielded to the will of God.
Jesus said this in so many different ways. It’s part of the great Commandment! “Mark 12:31 …Love your neighbour as yourself.”
The Greatest expression of humility is service to others – Luke 22:26-27.
