PRAYER

Nehemiah 1:1-11

Prayer, Intercession and Supplication is a sure way to enforce the will of God on earth and in the life of believers. It is also a means of spending time in the presence of the Lord. Over the years, the concept and practice of prayer has been under attack in the life of believers.

Looking at the life of Jesus Christ, we could see that He spent time before God in prayer – Matthew 14:23 | Mark 1:35 | Luke 5:16 | Luke 6:12.

Throughout the entire Bible, you will find out that personal/corporate prayer and intercession is not negotiable and regular times of prayer is recommended – Acts 3:1.  The knowledge of God’s word and the power of the Holy Spirit are vital for a successful prayer life – 1 Corinthians 2:10 | Romans 8:26-27. In the leading passage, Nehemiah stepped in to pray and intercede for his people in captivity. In the midst of daily pressures and crises, he demonstrated a life of deep dependence on God combined with well-planned actions.

Group Discussion:

  1. Hanani brought a tragic report of the state of the Jews who survived captivity and concerning Jerusalem. How best should such reports be addressed in this modern day? See Nehemiah 1:4 | Mark 9:29

  2. What does Nehemiah 1:5-6 say to you about Nehemiah’s relationship with God? What are key words that one can deduce about Nehemiah’s approach in prayer?

  3. Nehemiah recognised the possible cause of the affliction, and he confessed before the Lord – Nehemiah 1:6-10. Discuss the need for confession and repentance for answered prayer – 2 Chronicles 7:14 | Acts 2:38 | Acts 3:19

  4. In Nehemiah 1:6-11, how did Nehemiah approach God and apply God’s word in prayer?

  5. How has God’s Word encouraged you in prayer?

  6. Thanksgiving, adoration, confession, consecration and supplication are useful elements for a balanced prayer life. Which of these do you find in Nehemiah’s prayer and which ones do you use?

  7. See 1 Corinthians 2:10 | Romans 8:26-27. Do you remember to engage the power of His Spirit and if you do, how do you do this?

Prayer:

  • Personal Reflection: Talk to God honestly about your struggles in prayer. Ask the Lord to help you.
  • Pray for a deeper and intimate revelation of God’s Will for divine turnaround in your life – 2 Chronicles 14:7
  • Pray or total trust in God – Jeremiah 17:7
