SPENDING TIME IN HIS PRESENCE

Exodus 33:7-34

When we really want to know someone, there is no substitute for spending quality time together. The same is true of our relationship with God. In the gospels, we see that Jesus Christ placed a high priority on being alone with His Father. Despite the overwhelming demands on His time, He will withdraw to lonely places to spend time with His Father and sometimes overnight – Matthew 14:23 | Mark 1:35 | Luke 5:16 | Luke 6:12

This is the discipline that we see in the lives of great men and women who pursue the knowledge of God.

Group Discussion:

  1. Spending time regularly with God is difficult for many people. What are some of the reasons for this and how can we overcome this?

  2. In order to meet with God, Moses pitched a tent outside the camp away from distractions of noise and people. What happened during his time with God? See Exodus 33:7, 10, 11

  3. Describe Moses’ relationship with God in the above verses.

  4. In Exodus 33:12-23, we are allowed inside the tent of meeting while Moses converses with God. What request does Moses make in Exodus 33:13, 15, 18?

How might Moses’ example relate to our meeting with God?

  5. Why did God ask Moses to come to Him alone, apart from ‘even the flocks and the herds’? – See Exodus 34:3

  6. What distractions hinder you from spending quality time alone with the Lord?

Personal Reflection:

Think about your own experience with personal Bible Study and Prayer. Talk to God about the struggles, frustrations or desires you have in this area.
