SACRIFICIAL LIVING – TOUCHING LIVES

1 John 3:16 – 24

Sacrifice is defined as “the act of giving up something valued for the sake of something else more important or worthy.” Sacrifice comes in many forms and may not always be convenient. When we commit to living sacrificially, we surrender our will to God, dedicating our lives to building up His kingdom and serving His children. We are invited to consider the Christian life, and ministry to others through the lens of sacrificial living. By so doing, we will be able to comprehend the aim of our ministry (purpose) and the role we play in the lives of others.

In Philippians 1:9–11, Apostle Paul shows how our prayers can impact the life of others. Abounding love, growing discernment, wise approval of what is good and right in any circumstance — this is a Godward life of spiritual worship tied to the prayers and labours of a sacrificial life; graciously assisting and serving the full and complete offering of God’s people to God.

For those who faithfully sacrifice through an honest tithe and offering, the Lord has promised overflowing blessings – Malachi 3:10-12. Not only does such sacrifice bless the individual and their family, but those voluntary contributions to the Church provide the energizing resources that support the work of the kingdom of the Lord to perform miracles every day. Obedience and adherence to the corporate days of fasting is another form of sacrifice. We are invited to make a donation of the cost or money saved on meals during the fast through the Church so it can be passed on in assistance of those in need – Exodus 23:10-11, Deuteronomy 15:7-11.

Sacrifice is ultimately a matter of the heart – “For if there is first a willing heart – Exodus 35:4-5 | 2 Corinthians 8:12 | 2 Corinthians 9:6-13.

Discussion:

  1. I donate to Churches and I give to people and charities. When can my giving be considered as unsacrificial? – 2 Corinthians 8:12 | 1 Corinthians 13:3.

  2. Give examples of sacrifice or giving that is not acceptable to God – See Genesis 4:1-5 | Malachi 1:6-8 | Matthew 6:1-4 | Mark 12:41-44.

  3. Apart from what has been discussed today, what other ways can I touch lives sacrificially?

  4. What are the reasons people find it hard to give sacrificially?

Prayer.
